Roll Call: Meet the Teacher
We’re delighted to welcome early childhood educator Sheri Ruether to the Elachee Nature Academy team, and she is eager to welcome the inaugural class of Kindergarten-1st Grade students the first day of school on August 5. Sheri is lead teacher for this accredited K-1st Grade program, a seamless academic progression from the Elachee’s acclaimed Nature Preschool.
Sheri offers this nugget to parents seeking a non-traditional academic choice for their young children.
“Nature-based education is so much more developmentally appropriate because it promotes wonder and inquiry which comes naturally at this age,” Sheri explains. “I can apply creative discovery to anything outdoors, then take it one step further by incorporating academic standards that ready them for the next grade level.”
Sheri comes to Elachee Nature Academy from Gwinnett County Public Schools where she has taught 1st Grade and Kindergarten since 2004. She began her early childhood education career in the Cobb County school system nearly 14 years ago.
“I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and hope to instill the love for learning in each of my students,” she shares. “Today, I continue to go to school and seek other opportunities to better myself as a teacher and person. I am currently finishing up my doctoral degree in Learning, Instruction and Innovation. The focus of my dissertation is on using outdoor classrooms. I also have a Master’s degree in Reading and Literacy in the Elementary School, and an Educational Specialist’s degree in Brain Research.”
The past decade, Sheri has also devoted herself to significant independent study. She has received numerous certifications from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to help her teach students about our natural environment using Georgia’s state standards. In addition, Sheri has also immersed herself in other relevant certification training on best practices of environmental-based education.
What can we say? A match made in Heaven.
