Elachee Nature Science Center, one of the premier nature centers in Georgia, provides environmental education programs in the form of school field trips for students and also as workshops, camps, and events for the general public. Elachee's sprawling
campus, located in North Georgia, consists of a woodland refuge and an interactive museum that
will excite and educate visitors of all ages. We invite you to visit and enjoy
the museum and nature
preserve or participate in our SACS-accredited educational
programs for schools and groups which are designed to be engaging, educational,
and memorable. Your visit may include a stop at our live animal
exhibits and the native plant garden at the
entrance to the Center. Surrounding the Center is the
1,500 acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve
laced with over 13 miles of nature
trails. This large protected area with diverse habitats provides an ideal outdoor classroom, plant and animal sanctuary, and variety of scenic hiking trails.

Students learn about kinds of energy |
Elachee Spring Education Program Guide. Click here to view.
In order to better serve our teachers and also preserve our natural resources, our new program guide is available here online. If you prefer a printed copy, please call us at 770-535-1976. Our naturalist staff is always excited to instruct students in a variety of topics including aquatic life, geology, astronomy, animals, botany, weather, energy, archaeology and even language arts. Our most requested program, Habitat is Home, explores the native terrain, plants, and animals of Georgia. Other popular programs include Seeing Stars, using our portable planetarium; Elachee Rocks, investigating Georgia's rocks and minerals; and our new energy program which identifies different kinds of energy through hands-on activities performed by the students. You can check out our many types of education programs here or go directly to the Spring 08 Program Guide. |

The Gainesville/Hall County Weed Management Area was inaugurated with a signing ceremony at the Watershed Stakeholders Meeting in October. The first Weed Management area in Georgia, the partnership will allow cooperation in identifying and controlling exotic invasive plants across political boundaries. Partners in the CWMA include the Chicopee Woods Park Commission, City of Gainesville, Hall County, GA Forestry Commission, Hall County Soil and Water Conservation, and the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council (GAEPPC). The partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to work together for education, detection, mapping, controlling and preventing the spread of exotic invasive plant species within the watershed. Learn more about Georgia's Exotic Pest Plants at the Council site: http://www.gaeppc.org/. |

Alien Plant Invader
|
Elachee's Weed Warriors.
In conjunction with the CWMA listed above, Elachee’s Volunteer Weed Warriors program began this fall. Volunteers are trained to identify exotic invasive plants that are a problem in the Preserve, then map infestations or work to control these pest plants. We need "Weed Warriors" to assist in our efforts to control these pesky invaders and protect the preserve for the survival of our native species. A great opportunity for groups and scouts! If you are interested in becoming a Weed Warrior please call 770-535-1976 or email preserve@elachee.org. Learn more here. |

Walnut Creek Restoration |
Walnut Creek gets revitalized! As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the health and biodiversity of the preserve, Walnut Creek is being restored as part of Elachee's 319(h) Watershed Restoration Grant, funded by the U. S. EPA through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division. Over the years, storm water runoff has eroded the banks and altered the original stream habitats. New structures installed in and around the creek force water to flow to the center which reduces stress on the banks, limits erosion, and recreates the natural habitats of the creek which provide homes to a variety of stream critters. Plantings will help with stabilization and to restore the flora of the area. |
