The Past Comes Alive at Elachee

Join some interesting, ancient and very large creatures at Elachee Nature Science Center when nine stomping, roaring dinosaurs and ice age mammals move in for a five-month stay.

Giants of The Past: Dinosaurs and Ice Age Mammals features robotic dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals that are designed and created by Kokoro Dinosaurs in California in keeping with current scientific knowledge about these animals of past eons. A computer-controlled air compressor brings the creatures to life by giving each its own sound and movement. Swaying heads, eyes that look right at you, and life-like roars will astound visitors.

Five nearly life-sized dinosaurs will be featured in the exhibit, including everyone's favorite, Tyrannosaurus Rex, an adult Maiasaura with a nest full of hatchling eggs, the domed-headed Pachcephalosaurus, an adult Apatosaurus with its young, and flying overhead a life-sized Pteranodon.

The exhibition also features four examples of Ice Age Mammals that lived well after the dinosaurs became extinct including a Woolly Mammoth, a 26-foot long Baluchitherium rhino type, plant-eating creature), a Megatherium (giant sloth), and a Smilodon family (saber toothed cat) complete with rolling cubs.

All three exhibit areas will be transformed into habitats and set designs specific to each romping, stomping giant of the past. Hands-on learning activities round out this educational and fun exhibition including a simulated dig box where children can be paleontologists for a day as they dig for "fossils."

Children and adults alike will enjoy controlling the movements of a mechanical skeletal dinosaur while learning about robotics and engineering. A display of real dinosaur and mammal fossils provided by paleontologist Dr. Steve Nicklas of Paleo Prospectors will amaze you. Adding to the fun and learning are the dino rub stations and learning activity areas.

Elachee has also planned special programming related to this exhibition:
