Waters
of Time: The Chicopee Woods Story follows the meanderings of Walnut Creek through previous times in the Chicopee Woods. Learn about past inhabitants of the area through dioramas, actual fossils and artifacts, and hands-on activities. Beginning with a display of two authentic fossilized Mosasaur skeletons, and continuing on through the
Ice Age, Native American, Colonial, and 20th Century periods, the Waters of Time story will bring you to the
present day and give you a glimpse of what the future holds for
the Chicopee Woods. |

Waters of Time highlights include visual and hands-on activities
for children including a dino dig box with real fossils to find, a 1-ton
petrified log, displays of actual fossils and artifacts, pottery rubbings to make and take home, and special nature goop where you can create forest animal
tracks. It provides a fun and educational experience for the entire
family. |

Searching for Spaceship Earth |

While inside
the Nature Center take a "voyage" to outer space in our Astronomy Hall, Searching for Spaceship Earth, filled with an array of displays
to acquaint you with our solar system, planet earth, and beyond.
Discover how much you weigh on other planets, make a rubbing of star constellations, see a 100 pound meteorite older than earth, and watch an astronomy video. Children will enjoy the moonscape, hands-on activities and special reading area. See the latest in earth science and astronomical discoveries through ViewSpace, a constantly updating video displaying images of earth, planets, and the universe taken from Hubble and other telescopes and space probes traveling throughout the universe. |

This new addition to the Astronomy Hall is a self-updating exhibit from the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), th ehome of the Hubble Space Telescope. A direct feed from STScI presents the latest and most beautiful images and information in astronomy and earth science. See high resolution images of our planet from the Hubble Telescope orbiting around the earth, celestial tours of other planets and objects in the universe, and updates from observation telescopes, satellites, orbiters and rovers traveling throughout the universe and on other planets. Also learn about weather, constellations and special events occurring in our night sky. Elachee's presentation of these amazing images is funded through a grant from the North Georgia Community Foundation. |

Stars Over Elachee. Learn to use a telescope and star chart to view stars, planets and constellations in the night sky. Programs begin just before dark so bring a flashlight and pencil. This program is most meaningful for adults and children 8 years and older. Pre-registration is required due to limited availabilty so call now at 770-535-1976 to reserve one of our telescopes. Indigo Bunting |
Neo-Tropical Migratory Birds.
This Indigo Bunting is one of the migratory birds that visit our area every year. See this authentic stuffed example and hear his song when you visit our migratory bird exhibit. Learn about birds that visit our area in this educational exhibit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that includes taxidermy examples and a selection of bird songs to hear. Explore how the birds get here, why their numbers are declining and what you can do to help. Included with museum admission. |

Also in the Center you can visit our live animal room with native amphibians
and reptiles; view our two Red Tailed Hawks in the aviary; and see if you can spot the anoles in the lobby. Check out our new habitat computer game and don't forget to examine
all the intriguing nature objects, puzzles and books at our "touch tables". Our nature shop is a great place to find educational
and fun novelties for nature lovers of all ages. You can also help to fund the care and feeding of the live animals by adopting one for a year at a time. View/print Adopt-A-Friend brochure. |
Surrounding The Center |

Outside
the nature center enjoy our native plants and rain
garden; tour our compost demonstration site; picnic in any number
of great spots; or take a stroll or hike on one of the trails
through the 1,500-acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve surrounding
the Center. Trail choices include a paved trail that is handicapped
accessible for strollers or those with limited mobility, a one-mile
loop along a gentle flowing creek, and the longer trails that cross the entire Preserve. Learn more about our trails here. |
