Earth Day 2008

Saturday, April 19th, 10 am -2 pm
Elachee's main campus off Atlanta Highway.

Earth

Celebrate our planet!

This is Planet Earth as seen from Apollo 17. It is the third planet from the Sun. The Earth is shaped like a sphere and composed mostly of rock. Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is water. The planet has a relatively thin atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. Earth has a single large moon that is about 1/4 of its diameter. With its abundance of liquid water, Earth supports a large variety of life forms.

Join us for earth-friendly activities and demonstrations to acquaint you with the wonders of our planet and what you can do to keep it healthy.

Highlights of the Celebration Include:

RaptorShow

Raptor Show.
Take advantage of this opportunity to observe live raptors up close. See birds of prey fly overhead and learn about their habits and characteristics in a presentation by SOAR (Save Our American Raptors) from Canton, GA.

Geocachers

Geocache.
Do you like scavenger hunts? You'll enjoy learning about geocaching. It's a great family activity that gets the kids outside, moving, and having fun all at the same time. Use a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit to search for cache boxes hidden in the woods. The cache contains rewards or goodies for the finder who in turn leaves a surprise for the next finder. This adventure game provides an opportunity to learn about navigation, habitats, geography, and good stewardship for being in the woods. The opportunities for caches are boundless with sites all over the world and internet access for locating them locally and abroad.

SpringHike
Nature Hikes.
Discover the wonders of Spring in the Chicopee Woods as you look for wildflowers, birds and other critters with the help of the experienced eye of one of our naturalists. Stops along the way include bird watching, searching for stream critters, and learning about keeping our streams healthy from GA Adopt-a-Stream.

Goph&Friend

Elachee critters.
Meet some of our resident Elachee critters up close. The gopher tortoise, corn snakes and highly popular uromastyx lizards are favorites. Don't forget to stop by the live animal room to check out all our resident animals.

TouchBoxes Grow-A-Plant.
Choose your own seed to plant and take home. With care and water you should have a plant in a short time.
Birdfeeders Recycled Crafts.
Turn recycled items into something fun or useful. The children will enjoy making their own creation to celebrate the outdoors.
CompostSite

Recycle and Compost.
Help cut down on your garbage sent to the landfill by recycling plastics, glass, aluminum and other reusable items. Find out about using your grass clippings, leaves and other yard materials to make rich soil for your garden.

EddieEarth

Eddie Earth.
Eddie Earth is taking a tour of the museum. See if you can find him as he travels throught the exhibit halls. Pick up a checklist in the lobby and when you're finished finding all his locations, bring it back to the lobby for a treat.
